About Intelligent Graphics LLC

Our history

Auto-trol Technology Corporation, previously located in Denver, Colorado, was an innovative CAD company founded in 1962. Its CAD products were based on their flagship graphics systems called Series 7000 for mechanical design and Series 5000, principally for 2-D engineering but later expanded into 3-D and mapping.

Over the years, Series 5000 grew into an exceptionally flexible system on which numerous applications were built including those for engineering drafting, architectural design, wiring diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams, 3-D process plant modeling, and technical illustration. The strength of the system is in its multilevel customization possibilities, ranging from custom tool bars to sophisticated interfaces with external databases and other programs. Series 5000 includes a rich command set, programmable macros, user interface components such as pop-up menus and forms, a C++-based programming language that interfaces with the graphics system, and an extended Structured Query Language (SQL) that interfaces directly with an Oracle database.

In 2010, Auto-trol was bought by Versata. Versata released all US employees and outsourced most software development and customer support overseas. At the time, Auto-trol's main CAD offerings were Tech Ilustrator and Process Plant Design. A year later, all employees of the German subsidiary were also released. This left a number of customers scrambling, some of which had ongoing support and customization in progress.

In 2011, Intelligent Graphics LLC was founded under Colorado law in order to address the needs of these customers. The company was created to enhance the visibility and image of services being provided by Matthews Software Engineering Services of Lyon, France.

Intelligent Graphics LLC was born out of the desire to help customers of Auto-trol Technology's Tech Illustrator and Process Plant Design products.

Our founder

John Matthews is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Colorado, USA. After graduating from the University of Colorado with degrees in civil and architectural engineering, he spent several years with the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver where he discovered CAD systems for the first time (M&S Intergraph). Having been interested in computer programming since high school, his interest was piqued during a 3-year stint in Sydney, Australia working for Technical Computing and Graphics Pty, a small firm selling Applicon CAD systems and developing a computer aided mapping system.

Returning to the Denver area, John joined Auto-trol Technology Corporation where he spent a 25+ year career, first in Denver, then Munich, Germany, and finally in Lyon, France. While most of his work was in software development and customization, he also spent time working in marketing and as a sales assistant.

Now self-employed, John continues to help customers with custom software enhancements and advice. John speaks English, German and French.

Who we've helped

We've helped a number of customers with varying levels of support and customization, including General Motors, Bombardier, Airbus, Eagle Burgmann, PSE Engineering, and Saab Aerotech. Projects have ranged from simple software configuration to sophisticated add-on applications.
